Project Paste

So… I keep trying to come up with little projects that I hope will promote free expression of artists and creatives in a way that it can be showcased on the streets of Toledo. The main goal being that ANYONE that travel throughout the city of Toledo, Ohio can see. There are many problems that arise when using the streets as a gallery. For one, the city does not appreciate destruction of property and the penalties for doing so can be quite undesirable.

So… thinking along those guidelines and researching how free expression is and has been being displayed throughout the world, one of the most in-destructive methods that allow a wide range of expression is wheatpasting (pasting poster pasting… it has tons of names). It is basically the same method of hanging wall paper. A mixture is created that not only hangs paper, it protects it from the elements somewhat.  I have done this multiple, times in my life and it really can go both ways. It can either be super easy or almost impossible. Depending on how big the your art is, sometimes the art has to be cut in sections to ensure that no creases appear when hanging the work. If you have more than 2 sections to hang you have to make sure that they all are lined up perfect with one another. It can drive you insane ( especially when it is 20 ft off the ground you are standing on).

So… obviously, you can get in trouble for doing this. However, it is very easy to remove and most authorities will let you remove the art and go free. Some won’t. Not fun!

So… I thought about creating a “Star 001″ template and sending it to people to design them however they wanted. It doesn’t matter how you do it. You don’t even need to put it in the template. As long as the Star is at least 5×5 in and is visible for identification, your free to do what you want.  The 5×5 in thing sounds big but your art will need to big enough to be seen from a good distance. The templates will be handed out in whatever size you will need. You can created your art digitally or by hand. I only ask if you are going to need your work printed that you only use black and white. Over sized color prints can be super expensive. If you will be doing it by hand, you will receive a printed template in the size you requested.

So… This could be a huge thing so I will need to create a sign-up list. You can sign up by commenting on this post. I will comment on this post first to show you how this will work. If you are sign the list you must submit a lil example of your work. If this attracts a lot of creatives I will need to shrink the list. I am really really sorry to do that but I am going to pay for the project out of my pocket and it could cost me a ton to just print the templates. You pay for square footage. In that case I will send invite emails to the people that made the final list.

( Man! I hate being like that. It’s like picking teams for dodge ball. You want everyone to play but only so many can be on your team).

Remember** The only rules I have is that the Star 001 logo can be no smaller than 5×5 in and must be visible for identification. That’s all

I really hope this attracts a lot of people. I will stretch my budget as far as possible so that I can showcase as many people as possible out there. I will hang your work in a location of my choice and tell you where it is only upon request. Some people will have fun finding their own work. I will more than likely post pictures and locations of each piece AFTER I GET THE OK FROM EACH ARTIST.
